Merle has somewhere around 40 No. 1 country hits. His music is an mixture of Western swing, honky-tonk, even blues and traditional jazz into his compositions and arrangements, and his world-weary, stunning delivery, Haggard has always told it as he saw it in every situation.
When I think of people like Haggard. . . Nelson . . . Jennings. . . I think about the skill that brings music straight from their heart to the heart of a listener. There’s no auto-tuning or any special effects. . . no pyrotechnics. . . just a man with a message.
Merle paid his dues and help make country music a defining factor in the fabric of America. . . this guy is the real deal and even at 70 something. . . could probably still kick some ass (if he had to). . .
